Exploring Nature with Our Young Kids

When it comes to family adventures, we’re all in for something epic! So, what’s our latest escapade? Backpacking with our five young explorers, which includes my sister and her two little ones (ages 1 and 3), as well as my own three kiddos (ages 1, 3, and 5)!

As a family, we’ve discovered that there’s nothing quite like immersing ourselves in the great outdoors and experiencing the wonder of nature together. Backpacking with kids might sound daunting, but with the right approach, it can be amazing! There are of course going to be hard moments (just like at home, the grocery store, etc- but overall amazing!)

Here’s how we keep the smiles on our little ones’ faces and the excitement in our hearts while hiking through stunning landscapes.

Mix Adventure with Play
Our secret to happy little hikers? Balancing adventure with play! 🌲 During our journeys, we’ve found that incorporating games into our hikes keeps our kids engaged and entertained. Some of our favorites include:
  • Hide and Seek: This classic game gets a wilderness twist as we encourage our kids to hide nearby, ensuring their safety.
  • Tag: A game of tag on the trail adds an extra layer of excitement to our treks.
  • Spontaneous Scavenger Hunts: Nature is full of treasures waiting to be discovered. We turn our hikes into thrilling scavenger hunts, encouraging our kids to spot and collect interesting finds.
  • Scenic Picnics: Taking breaks to enjoy a scenic picnic with sandwiches, fruit, and snacks is not only a time to refuel but also an opportunity to soak in the beauty of the outdoors.

Must-Have Packing List

Backpacking with kids requires careful planning and packing. Here’s our essential checklist to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip:

  1. Kid-Friendly Backpacks: Equip your young adventurers with their own backpacks to carry essentials like water bottles, snacks, and a small toy or two. 🎒

  2. Abundant Snacks: Hungry hikers are not happy hikers! Pack an assortment of snacks to keep those little tummies satisfied. 🥪🍎

  3. Hydration for All: Ensure everyone has their water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the journey. 💧

  4. Comfortable Hiking Shoes: Good footwear is key to conquering the trails comfortably. 👟

  5. First-Aid Kit: Accidents happen, so be prepared with a well-stocked first-aid kit. 🩹

  6. Sunscreen and Bug Spray: Protect your family from the elements with sunscreen and bug spray. 🌞🦟

  7. Extra Clothes: Layer up! Weather can change quickly, so bring extra clothing to stay warm and dry. 🧥

  8. Navigation Tools: Maps and a reliable compass will help you stay on course. 🗺️🧭

With these essentials in tow, you’re ready for unforgettable family adventures in the great outdoors!  It’s not just about the destination; it’s about nurturing a love for nature in the hearts of your young ones while creating memories that will last a lifetime.
