Traveling with young children can feel a bit stressful and overwhelming when it comes to considering all of the things that will make your trip as smooth as possible. I personally find that LESS is MORE overall when it comes to life in general- but especially when it comes to travel. Less to cart around, less to forget and less to shuffle through and try to remember using.

There are a few basics that I have found really helpful on our trips with the kids.

First- let’s talk clothing. I really prefer something like merino wool for travel because it doesn’t get stinky as quickly, it’s quick and easy to clean, and it dries to fast.

Some of my favorite options for merino wool when it comes to my kids are Iksplor and Reima.

  • Iksplor has been something my kids have used for a couple years. It’s super cozy and they have a variety of different weights. They have options from newbon up. Honestly- when I have another newborn, they’ll probably live almost exclusively in Iksplor. It’s that good!
  • Reima offers a wide variety of options that have all been incredible. Overall though, we’ve been so happy with the merino wool base and mid layers that we were gifted. They are substantial and have held up really well with even the roughest play. I’m sure the infant products are fantastic as well- I just haven’t personally used them!

When it comes to myself, I have been so happy with a variety of options.

  • Iksplor offers fantastic base layers that are nursing friendly. I have absolutely loved the pieces that I have from them. The mid layer/ jogger sets have been fantastic for both my husband and I. The hoodie isn’t nursing friendly, but you can lift up if that works for you. I don’t find it’s as easy in a carrier, but possible if you don’t mind working for it.
  • I personally opt for something like the Wildelore nursing fleece if I want a warm sweater that’s nursing friendly.
  • Kojo Activewear and Homespun by Ruth also provide merino wool layers that I have enjoyed! I only have one from each, but they’ve been well loved and used frequently!

Baby Carriers

Any carrier works, but there are some that are a little more travel friendly compared to others. I will share some of our favorites that are both easily portable.

Tula Lite– This can be a fantastic option if you want a full buckle carrier, but don’t want extra bulk. It’s a fanny pack that converts into a buckle carrier. It’s lightweight and great even in hotter temps.

You can find it on Amazon HERE

or through Tula Baby direct HERE

Hippie Joey

Are you looking for something to help support your child who is frequently up and down or just for easier and more comfy use on the plane? Check out the Hippie Joey. You can breeze through the airport with a supporting hand on baby or toddler, use it as a nice scarf, throw it on as a skirt if you’ve run low on options, etc. It’s all around a favorite that I bring on EVERY trip!

This carrier is frequently knocked off by LOW quality brands that DO NOT support your baby the same way and can be incredibly dangerous. Make sure you buy directly- they are only sold HERE.

Trail Magik

This is the perfect travel option for those who love traveling with a backpack. Not only can you use it on hikes, backpacking trips, etc- but also anytime you’re traveling with a backpack. This works especially well on backpacks that have a hip belt and load lifters like you see on most traditional hiking packs. This is a great option for those who are more interested in outdoorsie activities, and your little one is walking a fair amount.

Check it out HERE.

Sound Machines

I love using a sound machine on trips. They are handy for keeping consistency and a soothing background to all of the chaos that can come with hotels, airports, etc.

Some of my favorite sound machines:

  • Hatch– We primarily use this one at home, but we’ve also used it on the road when our travel one broke.
  • DreamEgg– My sister actually owns this, but we used it on a backpacking trip together and it was absolutely fantastic. A good size, has a night light on some models, and then multiple sounds. I recently received one as well and I’ve been happily impressed with the battery and sound quality.
  • LectroFan– This has been my tried and true for travel. It works great, super compact and offers a long battery plus loud sound if needed.
  •

There are of course so many options, these are just ones I’ve used and enjoyed!

Travel Bags/Suitcases

No Reception Club

If you are looking for a top of the line, quality construction bag that was designed by parents who travel with their kids- This is it!! The quality and thoughtfulness in the design has blown me away, every time I use it. It’s lightweight, yet puts up with being tossed around during travel. It allows you to thoroughly organize all of your items. I’ve been able to pack for me and my three kids (easily could do 4 kids) for multi day trips in the Hideaway Duffel. The Getaway Bag is your ultimate diaper bag that grows with your family. No need to have multiple diaper bags or travel bags- it literally does it all and is so well designed (there’s even a waterproof compartment for all the baby and toddler messes.)

MiaMily

This is a fantastic suitcase that offers a seat for your child. It’s been truly amazing for tired toddler legs during our travels. The base is wider allowing for a more stable ride and the quality construction lasts well. We’ve used it so much on all of our trips. It holds a lot of items and is well organized.

Check it out HERE.

While you truly don’t NEED anything specific (aside from a bag and your kids)- I’ve definitely found these items have been incredible in allowing us a smoother transition to a trip. Whether making packing easier, having options that make getting through the airport faster, or making the hotel a little more like home- having a few things you love using can make it a little easier.
