Getting outside in the cold can be a bit intimidating! Especially with rain and a young baby. So, what are some things to keep in mind?
Let’s start with clothing and layers! I personally love using merino wool when possible. If that’s not something you choose to use (for any reason) try to just ensure it’s not cotton. When cotton gets wet, you get COLD!!
Some of my favorite options for merino wool when it comes to my kids are Iksplor and Reima.
- Iksplor has been something my kids have used for a couple years. It’s super cozy and they have a variety of different weights. They have options from newbon up. Honestly- if I had another newborn, they’d probably live almost exclusively in Iksplor. It’s that good!
- Reima offers a wide variety of options that have all been incredible. Overall though, we’ve been so happy with the merino wool base and mid layers that we were gifted. They are substantial and have held up really well with even the roughest play. I’m sure the infant products are fantastic as well- I just haven’t personally used them!
When it comes to myself, I have been so happy with a variety of options.
- Iksplor offers fantastic base layers that are nursing friendly. I have absolutely loved the pieces that I have from them. The mid layer/ jogger sets have been fantastic for both my husband and I. The hoodie isn’t nursing friendly, but you can lift up if that works for you. I don’t find it’s as easy in a carrier, but possible if you don’t mind working for it.
- I personally opt for something like the Wildelore nursing fleece if I want a warm sweater that’s nursing friendly.
- Kojo Activewear and Homespun by Ruth also provide merino wool layers that I have enjoyed! I only have one from each, but they’ve been well loved and used frequently!

Baby Carriers
Most carriers pair well underneath a babywearing coat or can be used with other methods of keeping baby warm. In the above video I was using an Amphibababy. You can read more about it HERE.
You can also find a list of different soft structure (also known as buckle carriers) HERE. These are some of the most commonly used options for outdoorsy parents or those who just want simplicity in a carrier.
Let me know if you have any questions about different options! You can leave them in the comments here. I look forward to seeing what you want to hear more about!
